Labour of Love – Launch and Auditions

The October play (5th to 7th October) will be

Labour of Love by James Graham

This is a relatively new play professionally performed in 2017 with Martin Freeman and Tamsin Greig.

James Graham is a highly successful modern playwright ’This House’ performed at the National Theatre. He currently has his latest play ‘This England’ running now at the National Theatre. He also wrote the highly rated drama series ’Sherwood’

Labour of Love is a political comedy set in the party’s traditional northern heartlands. Its particular challenge is that it explores the clash of philosophy, culture and class against the backdrop of the Labour Party over 25 years from Kinnock, through Blair to Corbyn. That sounds quite sombre but it is a really sharp comedy with parts that verge on farce.

Labour MP David Lyons cares about modernisation and electability, his constituency agent, Jean Whittaker, cares about principles and her community but, what are their real feelings for each other?

So up is down, left is right, right is wrong, behold the new politics.

CAST:

David Lyons (a Labour MP)

Jean Whittaker (a constituency agent)

Elizabeth Lyons (David’s wife)

Len Prior (a local councillor and party worker)

Margot Midler (a constituent and party worker)

Mr Shen (a Chinese businessman investor)

Also, a group of constituents, party workers, delivery boy, takeaway owner, vitally important to the transition from one period to another.

There are a group of unique challenges for this production. It spans a period of over 25 years, early 1990’s to 2017 or, put another way from 1970’s bulky computers and fax machine to iphones.

If anyone has or has any ideas for where we can find old computers and a fax machine please let me know.

The Launch/ auditions will be on Sunday 23rd July 2.00 to 5.00

at

The Perranwell Centre.

Auditions will be open to all. Please can everyone share this information far and wide so we can bring new and existing members to this production, especially, can we share the role of Mr Shen, who needs to be of Asian background (age is not specific 18 to 60)

As the play spans 25 years, age for all the parts is not specific.

So, whatever your political affiliation, red, blue, green, independent or, none at all, please join us in staging what will be an amateur drama FIRST and only the SECOND production ever of this brilliant comedy.

Any queries please contact Director, John Frankland

Free Vocal Workshop

Sunday 12th February Vocal Workshop at Perranwell Centre 2.00 to 5.00pm

This FREE Workshop promises to be a lot of fun and will deal with not only protecting and exercising your voice, which will lead you to have more confidence in projection, but also how to deconstruct an accent, using the Yorkshire accent as a working example with text work from a Yorkshire play.

Our voice is the single most important element that we bring to our acting which is why CDDG have chosen it to be FREE. So whether you are considering joining us for the Youth Group ‘Wizard of Oz’, our October Play, maybe our Minack production in 2024 or simply want to learn a little more in a fun environment then we look forward to seeing you on the 12th Feb.

The Workshop is open to members and non-members from the age of 13 to however old you are!

The Workshop will be led by Gemma Wright a professional voice coach, lecturer at Falmouth University and contributor to the RSC vocal team.

Please can you send a request for booking to John Frankland (j-frankland@hotmail.co.uk ) as numbers will have to be limited and to help us assess how many cakes we need for the break.

Oedipus At Colonus

Oedipus at Colonus

Description

Oedipus The King

6th – 8th October 2022
The Perranwell Centre, Cornwall, TR3 7JU

This play was written for performance in Athens in 400 BC, and was set about nine hundred years earlier. Is it drama, is it history, is it myth? This was Sophocles most personal play, being set in his home village and dealing with the death of a flawed hero, written in the year before his own death. We are tackling this production in a semi-traditional manner, with a cast of eighteen, ranging in age from twelve to our loyal octogenarians. They are enjoying the challenge of tackling a production in unfamiliar style; it may be a very old play but it is new to them and will be new to you, our audience.

Travel down the rabbit hole and join Alice, one of literature’s most beloved heroines, in her madcap adventures.  Featuring updated songs from Disney’s thrilling animated motion picture, Disney’s Alice in Wonderland Jr. is a fast-paced take on the classic tale.

The ever-curious Alice’s journey begins innocently enough as she chases the White Rabbit.  Her adventures become increasingly more strange as she races the Dodo Bird, gets tied up with Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, raps with a bubble-blowing Caterpillar and beats the Queen of Hearts at her own game!

Alice in Wonderland Jr

As it stands it’s STILL all systems go for Disney’s Alice in Wonderland JR to be performed by the Karnon Kidz on Friday 22nd – Sunday 24th July 2022.

As you can imagine with having to postpone this production twice, we are very much aware a lot has changed in that time. We have had an amazing response from our appeal asking those of you who were involved originally whether they were still interested in joining us for this fabulous show which is great. Bearing this in mind the Director Samantha Rogers and her team are excited to inform you that they will be holding a workshop/audition on Sunday 27th February 2 – 5pm at the Perranwell Centre for anyone aged between 7 & 18 years. We are looking forward to seeing you all again and finally getting this production on the road. If you have any friends or relatives that would like to join us then please do bring them along as we are aware that some of you couldn’t join us last time due to our age restrictions, but are now old enough to join us.

If you have any queries or are unable to attend but would like to take part then please do let us know by emailing: smeagleandprecious@hotmail.com

Pop Goes the Patient - Two Point OH

Description

CDDG, as part of its extended Fiftieth Anniversary Celebrations, presents two one act plays: POP GOES THE PATIENT and TWO POINT OH

7th – 9th October 2021
The Perrranwell Centre, Cornwall, TR3 7JU

Pop Goes the Patient was the Group’s first ever production in 1970.  It has now been adapted by director John Frankland and will be staged as a radio drama (with audience participation).

Two Point OH, by Jeff Dunne of Maryland, USA, was the winner of our One Act Play Writing Competition last year.  A story of when technology goes wrong, it will be directed by Nick Vale.

These two plays represent CDDG’s ethos:  proud of our successful history, but always looking to the future.

One Act Play – We Have a Winner!

One Act Play Competition

We have a winner! When 294 became 1!

It’s taken 9 months, 3 lockdowns for firstly the CDDG panel to arrive at a shortlist of 14 and then secondly for the judges (Kirsty Cotton, Talent Development Programme Manager at Hall For Cornwall, Libby Shaw, Manager at Waterstones Truro and Local Author Liz Fenwick, latest book ’The Path to the Sea’ 2019) to choose a winner.

AND THE WINNER IS……………..

’Two Point OH’ by Jeff Dunne, Maryland USA.

In a very difficult and tight decision the judges picked 3 further plays to be joint runners up. So in no particular order:

THE RUNNERS UP ARE………………

’The Notice’ by Lucy Charleston,Truro Cornwall.

’The Incident at Wembley Stadium’ by Lucas Kingman, Falmouth Cornwall.

’Seven Small Deaths’ by Emily Hageman. Iowa USA.

To see just how hard a decision it was, each of these plays are here to download for you to read yourself:
